David Warner announces Test retirement date, says would like to play last match against Pakistan at SCG

04 Jun 2023

Australian opener David Warner has revealed that he wants to play his last Test at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) against Pakistan in January.

“If I can get through this (WTC final and ensuing Ashes campaign) and make the Pakistan series, I will definitely finish up then,” Warner was quoted by Cricket.com.au.

“I probably owe it to myself and my family – if I can score runs here and continue to play back in Australia – I can definitely say I won’t be playing that West Indies series.”

The southpaw is hopeful to keep playing white-ball cricket for Australia until the 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA.

“You’ve got to score runs. I’ve always said the (2024) World Cup would probably be my final game,” Warner said.

Warner, 36, had endured a difficult tour of India earlier this year, and even though the Delhi Capitals skipper showed attacking intent while amassing 516 runs from 14 matches in the IPL, he will have his task cut out in the seaming English conditions.

Warner, apart from a magnificent double hundred against South Africa last December, has struggled for runs in recent assignments, managing a mere 26 runs in three Test innings in the recent tour of India before returning home injured.
