India move to No.1 spot after historic win at Gabba, Australia slip to No.3

19 Jan 2021

India moved to the No.1 spot in ICC World Test Championship standings after Rishabh Pant unleashed a late batting assault to fire visitors to an incredible three-wicket win in the fourth Test over Australia.

India breached Australia's Gabba fortress to seal a stunning win on Day 5 and seal the series 2-1. Rishabh Pant hit a heroic 89, Cheteshwar Pujara did his job with a solid fifty and Shubman Gill hit a brave 91 as India gunned down the highest successful chase -- 328 in Brisbane. India galloped to a record 328-run chase at the Gabba, becoming the first team since the West Indies in 1988 to beat Australia at their Brisbane stronghold.

India earned 30 points after the Gabba win and lead the World Test Championship points table pushing Australia to third position. Notably, India (430 points and 71.7 % PCT) are ahead of Australia (332 points and 69.2 % PCT) on the percentage of points won by them out of the total number of points contested.

By this calculation, India have earned 1.5 % PCT more than Australia. New Zealand are the second-ranked team on the World Test Championship points table with 70 % PCT and 420 points.

The ICC Board had ratified its Cricket Committee's decision to change the qualification structure for the final of the World Test Championship (WTC). Under the changed system, the WTC league standings would be determined by the percentage of points earned by teams.
